Tiki
Road Trip (2003) was James' first book. It was
revised and expanded for a vastly superior second edition in
2007. Both are now out of print. The final copy
(signed by James and cover artist Shag) was auctioned live
in 2016, raising $1050 for Planned Parenthood.

James became amused by the classic tiki bars of the 1930s to
1960s while touring with rock bands in the 1990s. As
an outlet from the pressures of touring life, he began
seeking out the relics of this mid-century phenomenon in
each new city. These explorations were chronicled on
The
Tiki Bar Review Pages, launched in 1995 as the first
tiki web site on the entire internet (it's gone now).
From that point forward, James was asked to discuss or write
about the subject frequently. He has now said all he
has to say on this topic, and is participating in
tiki-related projects very selectively.
